Angulo wins as team-mate is sent the wrong way
The highly promising Mario González of Cafés Baqué-Conservas Campos was headed for another dominant triumph when the organizers made a howler in the Xaniesteban Saria in Oiartzun on Sunday.
The Vuelta a Bidasoa conqueror and sub-23 national champion had left his ten breakaway companions for dead 30 clicks out. With only six kilometres to go, the win was all but his.
Then, at an intersection, a race official managed to send him in the wrong direction, causing him to being usurped by the peloton.
While González was left aggrieved, at least his team didn't suffer. Antonio Angulo emerged victorious from a three-up sprint, besting Erik Altúna of Telco'm and Naturgas Energía prodigy Imanol Estévez to the line.
Debabarrena's Borja Abásolo maintained the overall lead in the Torneu Euskaldun after finishing seventh, leading Lizarte's Higinio Fernández by four points.
