Star duo check out key País Vasco stages

Samuel Sánchez and Ion Izagirre are leaving nothing to chance when it comes to the team's biggest early-season goal, the Vuelta al País Vasco.

Accompanied by Euskaltel Euskadi's General Manager, Igor González de Galdeano, the duo spent Friday reconnoitering the last two stages of this year's edition, according to the team. They rode the last 40 clicks of the fifth stage from Eibar to Beasain in the Goierri region in Gipuzkoa, taking in, among others, the climbs of Gabiria (cat. 3), Barbaris (cat. 2) and Olaberria (cat. 2).

Later on they inspected the concluding stage's 24km individual time trial starting and finishing in Beasain.

With Sánchez's eyes firmly set on the Giro d'Italia in May, the 2008 Olympic champion is not expected to be in peak form for the race in which he's the defending champion. Ion Izagirre, on the other hand, has made the team's home race, starting on April Fool's Day, one of his main goal of the first half of the season.
