Euskaltel start off slow in Giro
Euskaltel didn't get off to the best of starts in today's Giro opening time trial. As expected, Taylor Phinney took out the stage and the pink jersey with it, while team leader Nieve ceded a potentially damaging 1:19.
Neither the course nor the distance of course were tailored to the Euskaltel riders, but Nieve's 170th place was perhaps worse than he'd hoped for. Kreuziger ended up 36 seconds back, Basso 39, Rodríguez 43, Schleck 0:59, Scarponi 1:06 and Gadret 1:16, so Nieve has already got some catching up to do.
Oroz was the team's best finisher in 106th.
Stage results:
- (1, Taylor Phinney (BMC), 10:26)
- 106, Juan José Oroz, 0:58
- 132, Amets Txurruka, 1:05
- 157, Jon Izagirre, 1:14
- 170, Mikel Nieve, 1:19
- 171, Adrián Sáez, 1:20
- 183, Miguel Minguez, 1:27
- 188, Victor Cabedo, 1:29
- 196, Pierre Cazaux, 1:38
- 198, Iván Velasco, 1:44

Are they ill? It's not their speciality but this is not normal, not for Nieve and suely not for Izagirre.
I agree, it's below what I expected, especially so from Izagirre. But then again he crashed out of Asturias last weekend, so he might not be fully recovered yet.
