Aberasturi grabs top Burgos result
As the Euskaltel riders were once again left wanting, it was up to Orbea's young speed merchant Jon Aberasturi to secure the Fundación Euskadi a noteworthy result at today's third stage of the Vuelta a Burgos.
It wasn't just at the end of the day the guys in blue showed their worth though; all day long they outshone their friends over at Euskaltel by racing aggressively and cleverly. Mikel Bizkarra and Haritz Orbe both made bids for stage glory in the closing stages of the 159km leg from Santo Domingo de Silas and Lemra. The talented duo both made brief appearances off the front, but there was no denying the sprint teams. Rabobank's Matti Breschel took a win that'll boost his morale after some injury-plagued years, besting French champ Bouhanni and Sky's Ben Swift to the line with considerable ease. Aberasturi wasn't far off in sixth, and showed he's making progress in the biggest races.
All riders in orange and blue finishes comfortably mid-pack, meaning Gorka Verdugo is nicely placed in seventh before the last pair of stages.
Carlos Barbero is the best rider in blue in 23rd.
Full results can be found here.
Tomorrow's stage to Ciudad Romana de Clunia is likely to be one for the riders in possession of a lethal finishing kick, while Sunday's queen-stage to the top of the Lagunas de Neila will sort out the GC.
