Detailed GP Induraín report
Just to finish off my coverage of the GP Induraín, here`s how the race unfolded: There were numerous attacks at the start, though none got away. But at the top of the 1st category Guirguillano, a break of six got away. Among those were an in-form Rúben Pérez. This break got over 3 minutes of leeway, until the peloton, led by Relax, reeled them in. Then, with 15 km remaining, another break went, including Mikel Astarloza, who did a great race, and Schumacher, Chavanel, Fran Perez and Vicioso. This group got over a minute on the peloton, and it seemed they would make it to the line. Though, at the start of the last, short ascent, it was all back together again. Euskaltel perfectly set-up Igor Antón for a shot at the win, and with a powerful burst of speed, he got a gap at the bottom of the ascent. Though, he went to early, and ended up 9th. Eventhough the win eluded Euskaltel, the team did a great race, and looks strong prior to the Vuelta al Pais Vasco. This is what nearly-victor Igor Antón had to say afterwards: "I went too early, as I lack the experience. The team though was phenomenal. They took me to the front, and especially Astarloza did a perfect job. I`ll learn from this." Samu, who started the race afterall, had to drop out early. He couldn`t match the pace at the top of the Lezaun, and got dropped. The reason is said to be a bad night. He then decided to just take it easy, as the Vuelta al Pais Vasco is coming up on Monday. Though, don`t worry, he`ll be ready for tomorrow no doubt.
