Calm day five in Giro d'Italia

Euskaltel stayed out of trouble and out of the limelight on today's stage five of the Giro d'Italia, a mainly flat 199 kilometres from Modena to Fano. Mikel Nieve stayed with the peloton and did not lose further ground on GC.

It wasn't equally comfortable for some of his team-mates, though. Four of the riders, Txurruka, Minguez, Cazaux and Sáez, finished among the last ten-man group a full 12:02 back. The former might have been easing his way back into competition following his scare in the time trial yesterday, but it's an unknown why the others struggled. Víctor Cabedo was seen using his inhaler some ten kilometres from the line (he's prone to allergies), but had no trouble handling the pace of the pack and finished in 136th place.

Mark Cavendish naturally took the win ahead of (naturally, again) Matthew Goss.

Stage results:
  • (1, Mark Cavendish (Sky), 4:43:15
  • 71, Juan José Oroz, 0:05
  • 81, Mikel Nieve, s.t.
  • 113, Iván Velasco, s.t.
  • 136, Víctor Cabedo, s.t.
  • 137, Jon Izagirre, s.t.
  • 191, Amets Txurruka, 12:02
  • 192, Pierre Cazaux, s.t.
  • 194, Miguel Mínguez, s.t.
  • 198, Adrián Sáez, s.t.

I think Txurruka is struggling with his injuries, Minguez still tired from his escape. Cazaux is very weak (he should never have a contract with another team) and I doubt if it's not the same story to Saez. Velasco after almost a week no crash and no time loss, that's a success:-) But seriously, our guys have it really difficult in the Giro. We're waiting to the mountains with still little hope Katusha and Astana will not dominate the rest.

Velasco is a brigt point, that's right! Well, I think Minguez was actually more tired from yesterday's TTT, which turned into an ITT for him...

I don't think Cazaux is to weak for Euskaltel. He is a very reliable domestic (for example he will not crash out of the race ;) ). I was absolutely pleased with his performance at the last Giro. And why not take it easy at the end of a race/stage.
