Izagirre goes strong in Tour TT

Gorka Izagirre showed once again he's a man to be reckoned with on all terrain with a solid individual time trial today.

The 24-year-old placed a decent 38th in the 41,5 km test against the clock from Arc-et-Senans to Besancon, and thus only dropped one place on GC. He's now a highly creditable 26th on GC heading into the first rest day, and with the form he's been showing, coupled with the fact that he'll be free to do whatever he wants now that Samu is out of the race, he can well go on to finish top 20 if he aims for it.

Egoi Martínez also had an okay day in the saddle, taking 60th on the day and also dropping only one place on GC to 33rd.

Stage nine results:
  • (1, Bradley Wiggins (Sky), 51:24:00)
  • 38, Gorka Izagirre, 4:20
  • 60, Egoi Martínez, 5:13
  • 81, Jorge Azanza, 5:48
  • 124, Rubén Pérez, 7:14
  • 146, Pablo Urtasun, 8:07
General classification:
  • (1, Bradley Wiggins (Sky), 39:09:20)
  • 26, Gorka Izagirre, 10:25
  • 33, Egoi Martínez, 15:18
  • 77, Jorge Azanza, 35:30
  • 103, Rubén Pérez, 41:22
  • 165, Pablo Urtasun, 1:05:16

He is one of the riders that the team will be built around for the next few years so lets hope that he now starts to fulfil the promise he has shown. There is almost half the race to go and some decent hills to climb and on his day he can take time out of almost anyone ( and I well remember him cheekily pinching a place off Andy Schleck last year on the mountain top before the Alp which cost him the KOM title)

Lets not forget that his brother has won a GT stage, never underestimate the power of sibling rivalry!

I agree, together with his brother, Mikel Landa and Peio Bilbao, he could well be the spine of the team in years to come.

Maybe he should give the KOM jersey a go? Not the very best climber, but decent on the climbs and aggressive and strong on all terrain.
