Izagirre steals the show in Gent-Wevelgem

Jon Izagirre put in one of Euskaltel's best ever performances in Gent-Wevelgem today.

The youngest of the brothers made it into the break of the day, left them for dead along with Saxo Bank's Lund on the first time up the Kemmelberg, stayed away 'till only 16 kilometres remained and hung on to claim a highly creditable 15th. It was a tour de force from the 23-year-old, who seems to be going well on every terrain these days. No wonder DS Iñaki Isasi was happy with his ever-aggressive charge.

"Jon did a great race", the former sprinter told www.fundacioneuskadi.com. "In a type of race we always struggle to impress in, I'm delighted with the whole team. In addition to Jon, Rubén (Pérez) and Gorka (Izagirre) also did well."

Aside from Jon, his brother Gorka, Rubén Pérez, Juan José Oroz and Pablo Urtasun finished 10 minutes down. Oroz, who was active early on, hit the deck with some 30 clicks left to go, but luckily got back up. García and Sáez abandoned.

Results:
  • (1, Tom Boonen, Omega Pharma-Quickstep)
  • 15, Jon Izagirre, 0:04
  • 82, Rubén Pérez, 10:01
  • 84, Juan José Oroz, s.t.
  • 89, Gorka Izagirre, s.t.
  • 144, Pablo Urtasun, s.t.

Top notch performance for Jon today!! Capping off an all-round fantastic weekend for the Orange.

*Off topic: I've seen Gorka's and Jon's surname spelled both Izagirre and Izaguirre. The first seems more prevalent, but Sporza always spells it with the U. Does anyone know the reasoning behind the different spellings?

I have no idea. Both are used frequently - a bit like Pello and Peio.

Wonderfull, it's a surprise to see an orange man riding this strong in our Belgian classics. Top 15 in Gent Wevelgem and top 15 in Tirreno, taht's incredible. He's really an unique talent with a lot of possibilities (GC or classics). In my opinion the Izagirre brothers are the future of the orange team. I do not dare to compare them to the Schleck brothers, however, you never know...

Too bad they do not participate in Driedaagse DP. I wonder what it will be on Sunday in De Ronde Van Vlaanderen. An orange man in the top 20?
